Here are 7 steps for a blog to be search engine optimized:
1. Find a subject you know.
Make a list of subjects and choose the one you are most familiar with. If you own a business, then you may want to write about it.
If you are new to your business, then writing about a hobby or interest is best.
2. Find a blogging software program.
I love Wordpress but there are others like blogger.com, Live journal, and thought.com. I recommend using your own website to host the blog instead of free hosting.
This will be costly but well worth it if you want search engines to find your blog. If you're just blogging for fun, then free hosting will do just fine.
3. After you make blog settings
The next step is to add the post. I started with a keyword search tool like Google Ad-words.
Then I think of a string of words (3 or more) and do a search. What you are looking for is a lot of people searching for those words but not many people using those keywords.
When you find a set of keywords that 4,000 - 10,000 people are looking for but only 50% or less are using those keywords, then write your post around those words.
Use those words in your title and in the first paragraph (bold). This is the hard part. Make your blog posts make sense using those keywords.
This is where your creativity comes into play. You may not think you are creative, but you will be surprised when you think about it.
4. After you create a blog post send an email to your list and tell them about your blog.
I use Twitter but there are many social networking sites you can use like Facebook, My Space, Orkut, Linkedin, Tagged and many more.
5. If you want search engines to find your blog, post to your blog every day.
If that's not possible, then post at least 2-3 times per week. Search engines love fresh content, so the more you post, the higher you will rank in search engines.
6. Now that you have completed steps 1 - 5, it is time to take your blog posts and create articles.
You may have to change it a bit to follow the article posting rules. I love Ezine Articles, Article Dashboards, and Free Article Directories.
Once you have 3 articles posted, you will be considered an expert writer and it will also help you with the search engines.
I also recommend Squaido and Hub pages. This is a single web page with your article on it.
7. The last thing I recommend is to visit other blogs and leave a comment.
Make sure you read the post and leave a genuine comment. Also, use blog keywords in your comments. This will provide links to other sites, other things search engines are looking for.
Blogging can be fun as well as hard work. The more often you post, the quality of content and keywords you have in your posts and links to your posts will determine how quickly search engines find you.
It does take time to get "natural traffic" from blogging but in the end it will be worth it.
